Owain Glyndwr is of such great historical stature that he his not only just our national hero to be commemorated and celebrated in Wales but also throughout the world. Indeed over the latters years we have been approached by people from all over the world, not only Welsh People but others, seeking information on Owain Glyndwr regards a general interest but also to help them with their studies. This in mind, and following on our successful initiative of Cvoron Glyndwr on 21 Mehefin 2007 (see http://cenedl.blogspt.com/ ) we are embarking on an eciting new programme of Gwaith Glyndwr which is so ambitious the support for such requires that we go outside Wales to seek support, thus this in mind and huge interest abroad in Owain Glyndwr leads us towards establishing first this Blog ‘BYD GLYNDWR’ and uder it’s umbrella and on it’s platform seek to establish, advance and develop an International Foundation Glyndwr, here we are using the model of the existing Richard III Foundation as a good example as a guide to our requirements in fullfillment of some very major initiatives that will with out doubt require support from all over the world of ‘Byd Glyndwr’.
A brief intro to Initiatives aforementioned:
Founding Fathers Initiative – International Support for 16 Medi ‘Dydd Glyndwr’, in association with this we are in particular launching a Cenedl Glyndwr Tourism Service in time with copperation of a Trefi - Tiroedd Glyndwr Associaion to promote international interest in visting Tiroedd Glyndwr and associated historic sites.
The 21 June ‘Dydd y Senedd’ Initiative – An International linterest, association and contribution with an annual great Glyndwr Festival planned for Machynlleth. Not least in this area we hope in particular to see established a bi – annual International Glyndwr Foundation Convention, this however, may be many years away and thus at a much smaller level we hope to organise an annual event associated with our support for Cyfeillion Cefn Caer, home of Coron Glyndwr. This will take form of a Glyndwr weekend in which there shall be organised in Pennal area a number of events and activities, in time possibly the basis of an International Fringe Festival of the main Machynlleth festival. These Pennal events will be based around Cefn Caer where there shall be an exhibition and talks on Owain Glyndwr also a Banquet Glyndwr with Welsh entertainments including a little Son et Lumaire in the Orchard of Cefn Caer plus a guided tour of Glyndwr sites in the area.
Further information on above will become available in this ‘Byd Glyndwr’ blog in time, in particular note matters concerning Cyfeillion Cefn Caer, for which we hope in time a FGI ‘Byd Glyndwr’ wil give huge support.
An Introduction to FOUNDATION GLYNDWR INTERNATIONAL primarily concerns itself with an interest in the life and times of Prince Owain ap Gruffydd Fychan, more popularly known as Owain Glyndwr Tywysog Cymru – Prince of Wales. This concern then of course also includes an interest in the great War of Welsh Independence 1400-1416-1422, this being the last of the great Medieval Military struggles fought by the Welsh against Anglo – Norman Conquest and Subjection of their land. The period in which our interest lays may be taken to cover the 1350`s, the decade into which Prince Owain Glyndwr was born on up to the period of the 1450`s – as the decade in which most of Prince Owain`s contemporaries were to pass away and a decade in which there would soon arise whispers again of the return of a Mab Darogan.
· FOUNDATION GLYNDWR considers this period of the 1350`s to the 1450`s to be a most interesting and instructive period in the History of Wales, it is also perhaps the period that is the most formative of the Welsh Nation itself, indeed it is seen by many as the 100 years in which the Welsh Nation is born. The 1350`s is a decade which is still much troubled by the aftermath of the conquest of Wales in the latter years of the 13th century, following on the Conquest of Wales in 1282 up to 1345 there are a number of Welsh revolts not least as of major concern to the English was Madog`s War in 1294 and then in 1315-16 the Revolt of the Southern Welsh led by Llywelyn Bren. In the 1320`s there is again much discontent in Wales but it is not until 1345 that this discontent becomes serious with on the 14th February – a ‘Welsh St Valentines Day Massacre’ at Harlech of a group of English tax Collectors, this minor Northern Revolt is soon put down but not so easy to avoid is the visitation upon the land of the Plague – The Black Death that for much of the remaining years of the 14th Century pacifies Wales with a profound sickness.
· Far away on the Continent of Europe a ‘Welsh Wild Geese’ – Welsh Mercenaries hiring themselves out to the highest paymaster are fighting their way across France, Flanders, Spain and Italy and as well Switzerland and further afield, led by notable Welsh Warriors as Owain Lawgoch who in the 1370`s is deemed by the Welsh to be their ‘Mab Darogan’ who will return to free them from the tyranny of the English. Following on the assination by the English of Owain Lawgoch, the Welsh Mercenaries whom are fighting for the French against the English are to be led by Ieuan Wyn whose brother is later to become one of Glyndwr`s Captains. As the 15th Century begins to dawn upon Wales there is a stirring throughout the land, Welsh serfs leave the lordships of the March, ‘Trouble Makers’ are broken out of jail and all flee in to the Mountains – the Bards have done their work well all over the land of Wales and further afield there is again the whisperings about the coming of a ‘Mab Darogan’ but this time the people believe it and want it to be true. Even in England Welsh Labourers and Students have heard the call, on the Continent the welsh pirates in league with the Bretons are now more eager in their attacks upon the English coast and in France Dafydd ab Ieuan Goch latter day crusader with twenty years service in the Mediterranean fighting for the King of Cyprus against the Muslims returns to France to raise up the ‘Welsh Wild Geese’ – Mercenary Bands with the message that it is time to return to the Homeland, many of whom will return to fight in the cause of Welsh Freedom by the side of Prince Owain Glyndwr.
· In Wales, the first new year of a new century is to Dawn quietly but it is nevertheless to be A most momentous and memorable year and it is to end violently – in a most bloody Sunset that delivers Wales into a 16 Year War and 6 years of Guerrilla resistance in Eryri. In all 22 years of armed struggle which forever leaves its mark upon the land and its people and the Nation with the fond Memory for the greatest of its Warrior Princes who is to, in the fullness of time to become the National Hero of Wales – OWAIN GLYNDWR.
· Our period of interest which concludes some thirty years after Owain`s son Maredudd ab Owain ceases his Guerrilla war in Eryri and surrenders to the English along with many other ‘Die Hards’ who are forced to assemble in fields to beg forgiveness of an English King and then swear loyalty to a foreign crown as they must do or other wise face death in a most bloody of Executions. Alternatively one could run to the woods and become an Outlaw Rebel, one of the many and growing band of Bandits – ‘Adeir y Greim’ – the birds of crime as the English were to come to call them, as Llywelyn ap Moel also known as ‘Bonfraith Owain’ – Owain`s Song Thrush. These Bandits – Rebel Outlaws also had another name ‘Gwerin Owain’, they were the former soldiers of Owain`s Army who for what ever reason did or could not surrender and instead took to continuing their war with England by other means as the soon to be legendary ‘Banditti Cambria’. Their names to enter the folklore of Wales, Dafydd ap Gruffydd of Bryn Cyffo, Dafydd ap Siencyn of Dyffryn Conwy and others as Rheinallt of Fflint. For much of the 15th Century Wales was to witness increasingly the Gwerin Owain take advantage of England’s growing Dynastic and Political chaos that would in due course lead to the wars of the Roses. Our period to some degree concludes with the the decade of the 1450`s as once more Wales is to hear the whispers once more of a ‘Mab Darogan’ who by the 1480`s will arise as Henry Tudor – Henry VII of England which will lead on in time to the 1536 and 1545 acts of Annexation – the rest as they say – is History.
· In many ways any full appreciation of our main period of interest, study and promotion is such that it requires a familiarity with the period that proceeds it and that which follows it. So it is of necessity we have a prologue Dawn starting to arise on a cold winters day at Cilmeri in 1282, even though in many ways it is for an older Wales a Sunset. Then we also have a long Epilogue that sees a final Twighlight and going down of the Sun in London in the year 1529 with the Execution of Rhys ap Gruffydd a descendant of an old an ancient line of Welsh Princes. In this final chapter of our period of interest at its most broadest Wales is to witness a final terror upon the land as Judge Rowland Lee is sent into Wales to pacify its people and make them so pliable to acceptance of the Acts of Annexation – This is our Sunset – the End. The parameters and parimeters of our interests are of necessity of some breadth and depth, width and length for a more complete and full understanding of the life and times of Prince Owain Glyndwr and of the War of 1400-16-22. In these 22 years so much was to change, it is often said that in these times modern Wales is born as a weak and trembling infant perhaps, whatever of one thing we can be very sure the very being and Existence of Wales was saved and secured. Prince Owain Glyndwr`s legacy to Wales is the survival of the Welsh people and the creation of a welsh Nation – A dream that was always to remain the reality, this is what perhaps makes this period of our History so crucial to know about, appreciate and understand.
IN CONCLUSION:
The early – Celtic and Medieval History of Wales has long been ignored and shoved to one side, not only by an English orientated education system but also by the all to numerous and petty sectarian differences of the welsh themselves for as often as not reasons of Religion, Politics and even Cultural. Still today the History of Wales prior to 1536 is largely ignored and not taught properly to those under 12 and not at all in a full sense to those over 12. We are a Nation and people who for the most part only know a Quarter of our History or for the majority it may be even less than that. It is the great ambition of Foundation Glyndwr to help to turn back the tide of cerebral Colonialism and often self induced Historical Amnesia.

Most of those interested in the history of our nation and, especially, in the history of our greatest of national heroes, Owain Glyndŵr and his great war for Cymric Independence are well aware of the role that the town of Machynlleth had played in regards to that history but, I wonder how many are as aware of the fact that the town of Dolgellau had also played a similarly important role in the war?

It is well documented that the Prince and his Consul had dispatched at least one letter from Dolgellau to Charles V1 of France on the 10th May 1404 seeking a treaty with that King so where exactly in Dolgellau was this letter and, possibly, others (such as one that was dispatched to Henry Dwn of Cydweli at around the same time) composed?

The letter/s would have been composed at a consul gathering in a building important enough for such gatherings and according to local tradition, the building is question is one which bears the name Plas Cwrt yn Dre but which has been known locally, down through the centuries, as “The Old Parliament House of Owain Glyndŵr.

Plas Cwrt yn Dre or “Owain Glyndwr’s Parliament House” was a substantial property of high status in its day, It housed a hall and a balcony which was accessed by steps placed on the outside of the building so could have been a very appropriate site for Prince Owain Glyndŵr to hold assemblies with his Consul and other allies. Granted, local tradition, in itself, cannot be taken as evidence of the property’s authenticity as Owain Glyndŵr’s Parliament House but if the surviving documented proof that the letter composed and dispatched to Charles V1 on the 10th May 1404 was composed in Dolgellau is taken into consideration alongside the local tradition – which has survived centuries, then I would suggest that there is a strong enough case for acceptance of the authenticity of this property as being, at the least, one of the Assemblies of Prince Owain Glyndŵr where important political strategies such as treaties with France and other allies were debated and acted on.

The case for the property’s authenticity as an Assembly/Parliament House used by the Glyndŵr regime is strengthened further in a report compiled by the architect A.B. Phipson who carried out a survey on the property in 1885. Interestingly, he refers to the building as “Old Parliament House Dolgelley” (and not Plas Cwrt yn Dre) in both the plans he drafted of the property and his accompanying report. It was also revealed in the report that substantial parts of the property dated from the 14th century. If that indeed was the case, and I’m sure that a professional architect such as Mr Phipson knew how to do his job and can be believed, the property was in existence well before the Owain Glyndŵr War of Independence had started so it was available to be made use of by the Prince.

In my view, the accumulating evidence in regards to the property in question should have been more than enough to ensure that it was treasured as a national treasure should be but to strengthen the case for such even further, it transpires that the property had continued to play a role in Welsh history well over a century after the mysterious disappearance of Prince Owain Glyndŵr. By the middle of the 16th century, it had become the home of Baron Lewis Owen who was an important figure in the English Parliament during this period. He was also Chancellor to the Treasury covering North Wales and represented Merionethshire in Parliament but was dramatically killed in an ambush by the Red Bandits of Mawddwy in 1555.

By the mid 18th century, the Old Parliament House, along with a number of other buildings that formed the property Plas Cwrt yn Dre was fast deteriorating from neglect and the whole lot was sold at auction to a Mr Edward Jones who also owned the Ship Hotel located directly opposite the property. Even in those days, it seems that this historical old building had become the main tourist attraction in Dolgellau and some influential local townspeople who had begun to realise its importance - and potential, set up a committee with as its aim, to raise money to purchase and renovate the old Parliament as a museum for the town.

This committee commissioned A.B. Phipson to carry out a survey on the property and as well as confirm in his report that substantial parts of the property dated from the 14th century (as noted earlier) he also drew attention to certain fittings from that period that should be carefully preserved during restoration and quoted that the overall cost of the restoration would be between £150 - £200 – which was a small sum to raise to save such an important building, even in those days.

Had this committee achieved its aim, no doubt the Old Parliament House would have been saved in its wholeness and renovated to its former glory and would still be standing on its site in Dolgellau today as a magnificent memorial to the achievements of Owain Glyndŵr and as a strong symbol of his ambition for Cymru but, alas, that was not to be.

On the 5th November 1875, a public meeting was held to discuss the possibility of buying the property for the town. According to the local paper (Y Dydd) Mr Edward Jones came to this meeting and offered the property to the town for the price that he had paid for it at the auction or, he was prepared to rent the property to the town for five years for the reasonable sum of £21 per annum which would allow the town enough time to consider the purchase but, unbelievably, it was decided not to launch an appeal for funding to buy Plas Cwrt yn Dre because the then M.P. of Merioneth, Samuel Holland, had already launched another appeal in the town, to raise £1,000 towards the cost of establishing a private school for girls, Ysgol Dr Williams.

Dr Daniel Williams, a theologian from Wrecsam, had no association whatsoever with Dolgellau but on his death in 1716, he had left a substantial sum of money to be used for educational charity purposes in Cymru and, at this time, the Charity Trust involved was offering funding for the establishment and upkeep of a school in North Wales - on the condition that the town awarded the funding, could guarantee the sum of £1,000 towards the cost of building, along with 2 acres of land on a site that would be suitable for the school.

In all honesty, it would have made more sense to establish the school in Dr Williams’ home town Wrecsam but Samuel Holland was hell bent on getting the school for Dolgellau. As a result of this and due to the fact that the other committee had not even taken up Mr Edward Jones’s offer to have the property on a rental basis for five years, the opportunity to buy Plas Cwrt yn Dre for the town was lost forever and in the following year, the property was sold to a Mr Pryce-Jones (later to become Sir Pryce-Jones) of Newtown.

Plas Cwrt yn Dre was dismantled stone by stone and the hall, balcony and outside steps of the “Old Parliament House” were loaded into thirty two trucks and taken by rail to Newtown and restored in Dolerw Park on the Pryce-Jones Estate but. Apparently – and unfortunately, much of the character of this important historical treasure was lost in the restoration process but nevertheless, what’s left of this important part of our history still remains standing and is crying out to the nation to save it for the nation.

During the last century, it has been occupied for use by the army in the 2nd world war and then by the Girl Guides in the 1950’s and then, incredibly, it was given to the Quakers as a gift by Lady Sara Pryce-Jones in 1968. The Quakers have held meetings in the property regularly since 1986 but have now come to the decision that they can no longer afford its maintenance. During the last few years they have offered the property (for free!) to St Fagan’s (in the first instance) and then to Cadw. Unbelievably, both these establishments (that are meant to be custodians of our national heritage) declined the offer! St Fagan’s claim they cannot find the letter of offer and feel now that it’s best to leave the property where it is and Cadw declined the offer on the grounds that there is no definite proof in regards to its historical associations! Indeed, when Cadw registered the building as a Grade11 listed building in 1988, they stated haughtily on the registration document “Incorrectly termed Owain Glyndŵr’s Dolgellau Parliament House” and this without taking any notice whatsoever of the expertly carried out survey and associated report produced by the architect A.B. Phipson and without carrying out any tests of their own on the property and what about the historical association with Baron Lewis Owen? There’s plenty of evidence in regards to him having resided in the property.

The truth is that Cadw (Conquer And Destroy Wales) would rather not give any credence to any site or building in Cymru that has got ‘real’ associations with Owain Glyndŵr if they can get away without doing so. Admitting that the history of our greatest of national heroes is a ‘real’ history (and not a folk tale or myth) by authenticating battle sites or other historical sites and buildings that have played a definite role in Prince Owain Glyndŵr’s Great War for Welsh Independence would not please their English masters, those that planted them as an official body in Cymru, and for that reason, they will gladly capitalise on any chance to bury any concrete evidence that has any association with this important national history wherever it may surface. That, I would suggest, is the true reason why Cadw has never expressed any interest in carrying out a thorough examination of what’s left of the Old Parliament House, and that is why they would not accept the building as a gift and save it for the nation.

Following refusals by both St Fagan’s and Cadw to take the property off their hands, the Quakers have now placed it for sale on the open market and are in the process of selling it for £55,000 to an English Quaker who lives in England. I do not know what this gentleman’s intentions are for the property but whatever his plans, I still feel strongly that it should be bought for the nation. I have spoken to the Welsh Quakers and they understand and sympathise with this sentiment and have expressed that they would still consider selling it to the Nation if a body such as the Welsh Assembly or Cadw comes forward with a definite commitment to buy – and there still is a slim chance - as the buyer has asked Cadw to carry out a new assessment of the property as a listed building and the sale will not go through until Cadw has done so. This means that there’s still a chance to save the old Dolgellau Parliament House for the nation so, I will appeal to all out there who cares about this important part of our history and who cares about the prospect of losing another of our national treasures to immediately write to all your MP’s, AM’s and MEP’s drawing their attention to this issue and demanding that this property be purchased for the nation. £55,000 is not a great deal of money and if the property is purchased for the nation, it can be renovated to its former glory and can be opened to the public as a museum that would display the history of the building from the days of Owain Glyndŵr to the present.

I therefore appeal to one and all to immediately write to those aforementioned and others such as your local councillors that may be in a position to assist to save this unique part of our history. Remember, nobody campaigned to save Owain Glyndŵr’s Prison House in Corwen and it has been lost for ever. Let’s make sure history is not repeated and that the chance to save and renovate this historic treasure is lost for ever this time. Let’s ensure Owain Glyndwr’s Old Parliament House as a worthy Calennig to give to our nation at the launch of 2012.

This left a much unfullfilled purpose, in so far that our work in promotion of Hanes Glyndwr throughout the world has not been given the attention we had hoped to provide. This is now about to change as we embark on a new seven year programme part of which will see us at long last give more attention to our original purpose, but we can only do this successfuly and achieve as much on the world stage has we have done in Wales with the help of the the Welsh Exile Community or has we would describe ''Pobl Glyndwr in disporia''.

It is main ambition in this direction to see established a world wide organisation of ''pobl Glyndwr in disporia'', this would be a FOUNDATION GLYNDWR INTERNATIONAL. I admit straight off, that I am inspired here by the Richard III Foundation which works throughout the world as a charitable educational organisation, with a platform of aims and objectives plus programme of events and activities world wide which is most admirable. Embassy Glyndwr presented a huge Glyndŵr flag to the Welsh Assembly in 2001. Another flag was given to the National Eisteddfod of Wales that is flown annually. CADW flies the banner on some of their castles on Glyndwr Day, after a great deal of lobbying by Embassy Glyndwr, and it is seen in abundance on the St David’s Day March through Cardiff, along with the Welsh flag and the St David’s flag. Colourful rugby shirts can be bought featuring the flag, and more are being seen at festivities and national rugby matches.
